The Fujifilm XF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 is a professional weather-resistant super-telephoto zoom lens for your Fujifilm X-series interchangeable lens camera. As soon as I took the lens out of the box, I could feel this is a well built lens. Everything is nice to touch and moves smoothly.
The tripod foot rotates around the axis of the lens, so it is easy to switch from landscape to portrait and anything in between.
Let’s take a closer look at the lens and I’ll explain what all the letters and numbers mean.
Fuji XF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR
100-400mm is the focal length of this lens, and it Covers the 35mm equivalent of 152-609mm
The zoom is controlled with a rotating ring
The ‘R’ = means the lens is equiped with an aperture ring.
LM = Linear Motor, In fact, it has Twin Linear Motors that gives fast and quiet autofocus, ideal for fast moving objects like aircraft and motorsports, The autofocus system is internal, so there is no rotating front element when focusing which is great news for polarising filter use.
There is also a focus limiter switch, so you can set the focusing to the full range of 1.75m to infinity, or 5m to infinity.
OIS = Optical Image Stabilisation, A 5.0-stop image stabilization system — apparently, the most powerful in any super telephoto zoom lens, it is claimed to produce shake-free results even at the maximum telephoto setting of 400mm, or the 609mm (35mm format equivalent). Also, if panning is detected, the lens automatically switches camera shake correction to the vertical plane only.
The OIS can be easily switched on and off with a switch on the lens, you’ll want this off for tripod use as with any image stabilisation.
I have tested the OIS and was very impressed.
WR = Weather resistant - Both water and dust resistant and can be used in temps to -10c (please take care of me though, I am still fragile)
As for the glass, it has 21 elements arranged in 14 groups, with 5 ED (Extra Low Dispersion) lens elements and Has 1 SUPER ED lens to help stop chromatic aberration.
All this glass means this lens Weighs in at just under 1.4kg, it has a zoom lock to stop the lens creeping when walking around.
This lens is Compatible with Fuji’s 1.4x TC (extends it to 35mm equivalent of 213mm to 853mm)
The supplied Lens hood has a polarising filter window and a locking mechanism so it wont fall off.
I have seen online reviews compare this to the Canon 100-400mm lens, and say it is not as well built, it’s kind of dumb to compare this to anything else, If you’re after a super telephoto lens for your fuji X series camera, you don’t have any choice, this is it.
